by Dr. Jane Petro, Past President of AACS and Co-Chair of the Women in Cosmetic Surgery Committee
The theme of International Women’s Day 2018 inspired many: “When women support each other, amazing things happen.” Thanks to AACS President Dr. Mark Mandell-Brown, we will be able to bring that idea to AACS. With his help, we were able to launch the new Women in Cosmetic Surgery Committee (WICS) with me and Dr. Suzan Obagi serving as co-chairs.
The purpose of the Women in Cosmetic Surgery Committee is to motivate, mentor, and inspire women surgeons and medical students and encourage them to make significant contributions to the advancement of the field of cosmetic surgery.

One way you can get involved and support WICS is through the American Journal of Cosmetic Surgery, which will be dedicating an issue to Women in Cosmetic Surgery in 2021. Dr. Obagi and I encourage you to submit an article for this issue by December 1, 2020.
Not sure what to write about for the WICS issue of AJCS? In addition to original scientific articles, you can also submit book reviews, retrospective case studies, case reports and literature reviews. We would also like to hear first person accounts of interactions with mentors who have shaped your career. Feel free to contact us at moc.loa @ortepjrd and moc.liamg @dmigabo if you need more information or guidance when planning your submission.
AACS is in the middle of our call for volunteers to serve on various committees beginning in October 2020. Whether it is on WICS or another committee, we encourage you to consider applying to volunteer by July 31.
Dr. Obagi and I have been active AACS volunteers for more than 10 years and have found working with the AACS to be personally and professionally rewarding. Consider giving some time to help shape the future of cosmetic surgery. It’s our association and profession, and they can’t thrive without your support.
Look for more information on WICS activities coming soon.
