At the AACS 2022 Annual Scientific Meeting, Dr.’s Jane Petro, Andrea Moreira and Suzan Obagi gathered at the Women in Cosmetic Surgery(WiCS) Forum to address gender equality in the medical field and improvements they are currently making themselves. They discuss what can be done to change the standard for what is considered competence for women and males in the workplace.
Dr. Andrea Moreira addresses the gender inequality issue which was a significant factor in her career since the first day she started plastic surgery residency in Brazil. Dr. Moreira had to be more competent to achieve the same ranking as men. She is leaving her mark and making a difference to young medical students through being a mentor and helping them achieve their goals.
In the Dermatology field, Dr. Suzan Obagi sees that it is more of a gender equal specialty vs plastic surgery. Dermatology is approximately 70% female and 30% male which reflects in the quality of applicants. She has also put together a mentorship program that helps students align with an attending physician.
