Inside the Journey to Navigating Cosmetic Surgery with Dr. Scott Bueno

Scott Bueno, MD, DDS

Dr. Scott Bueno, an AACS Resident member, is a resident in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at UTSW/Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas. For Dr. Bueno, it was the combination of art and science along with helping people to look their best that attracted him to a career in cosmetic surgery.

What University(s) did you attend?

I went to UC Berkeley, Columbia University, and UT Southwestern.

How many years of school will it take you?

I’m currently a surgical resident, but with a cosmetic surgery fellowship afterward, I’ll have completed 15 years of training after high school.

What did you major in?

I was a science major, like most doctors, but you can major in whatever interests you as long as you complete the pre-med classes. Majoring in a non-science field can even make you stand out amongst other applicants. The important thing is to study something that you find interesting and can be passionate about.

How did you know you wanted to do this?

Art and science have always piqued my interest. The combination of these fields along with getting to interact with people and helping them look and feel their best on a daily basis are a few of the attractions that initially drew me to pursue a career in cosmetic surgery.

What is it like working as a cosmetic surgeon?

As a resident in any surgical specialty, there is not a lot of purely cosmetic surgery, but there are many opportunities to perform reconstructive surgery
with an aesthetic outcome in mind. These principles form the foundation for ultimately sub-
specializing in cosmetic surgery in a fellowship.

What is your favorite type of surgery to perform?

Being able to help people look and feel their best is extremely rewarding. As a maxillofacial surgery resident currently, my favorite cosmetic procedures involve the face, such as rhinoplasties, face lifts, and orthognathic surgery. I’m also very interested in fat grafting.

What is it like to be a fellow?

Something surprising about cosmetic surgery to many people is the fact that many surgical specialties perform cosmetic and reconstructive procedures during residency—not just plastic surgery, as many people have come to believe. These specialties include otolaryngology, oral & maxillofacial surgery, gynecology, plastic reconstructive surgery, dermatology, ophthalmology, general surgery, and more. Obtaining fellowship training after residency is an important step in getting the comprehensive education and skills necessary to focus one’s career in cosmetic surgery.
