American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery

AACS 2022 Annual Scientific Meeting

Alexander W. Sobel, DO, Vice President, Cosmetic Surgery Foundation

For those who missed the poster session at the 2022 ASM, this was a collection highlights of excellent original research being done by members of our Academy and not to be missed when viewing the now available video content from the meeting. These poster presentations not only represent the diversity of research being performed but also its applicability from basic science to patients. I am very proud to call out some highlights of this session here.

Data regarding the efficacy of a biomimetic peptide for COVID-19-induced telogen effluvium was presented by Dr. Debraj Shome. One of our current AACS training fellows, Dr. Anita Fulton, shared a small, but meaningful, study of abdominoplasty with concomitant trends abdominal bilateral tubal ligation suggesting the value of these procedures combined. A thoughtful and candid psychometric evaluation of a massive weight loss classification scheme demonstrated high interobserver variability and, as explained by Dr. Erik Nuveen, underscored the importance of treatment planning and execution by the surgeon evaluating the patient. A very practical examination of running simple versus subcuticular blepharoplasty closure showed advantages to subcuticular closure with non-absorbable suture courtesy of Dr. Donovan Reed’s research. Excellent photos accompanied Dr. Artur Rozentsvit’s presentation on lateral eyelid hooding, which was addressed with a novel approach that yet limits lateral extension of the blepharoplasty scar. A rhinoplasty maneuver to address boxy tip by mobilization of the lower lateral cartilage demonstrated excellent results as Dr. Rishal Ambaram shared. Highlighting the value cosmetic surgery can offer medicine and surgery at large, there was great interest in Dr. Ehab Akkary’s case of abdominal exploration with lysis of adhesions under tumescent anesthesia in a patient arguably too unstable for general anesthesia.

This brief review of the excellent session is certainly less than the presenters deserve, so I encourage you to view the video recording of the session. I hope we can all look forward to reading the full details of the presented research in the American Journal of Cosmetic Surgery.
